<image:caption>My aim is to enjoy life, find new ways for that, and as a healer, put this happiness into my objects and let them spread it to anybody who chooses this vibe. I often use antique jewellery as a starting point, leading me further along the line of time. I want to build bridges between different generations. I believe we have a choice and that we can carry on what is useful to us, we can transform it in a way that suits us best. Most of all, it's the connection to the power of the ancestors that for me this subject is about. Antique jewellery parts, silver, akoya pearl, freshwater pearl, 2022</image:caption>

The deeper meaning behind my work is to make the lifting and healing potential visible and use them as opportunities to live life joyfully. What drives me is the knowing that experience has shown that this is possible. That it works. I think it's interesting to observe who we are, who we can be, to find ways to explore the possibilities, how we can become who we want to become. What is the diversity that lurks within us, what is the way that allows so many colours to come out of us.</image:title>

<image:caption>We build community through Instagram, in-person gatherings, and the power of quantum manifestations. Along with my objects, this community carries on the energy that I have started. Sourcing, hoarding, buying is for survival. Its roots go back to the prehistoric times of mankind or even older. In the old days, when mammoths roamed the frozen Eurasian wastes, it was up to women to gather. They left their children in the care of their grandmothers, took their baskets and set off for the four corners of the world. They searched for berries, seeds, roots, snail shells and coloured stones, essential for making jewellery. They spent almost the whole day doing this. The object of the gathering may have changed, but the essence remained the same. Akoya pearl, freshwater pearl, ruby, herkimer diamant, diamant, silver, painted steel</image:caption>

<image:caption>I am constantly wondering what else is possible that I never thought of before. I believe that everyone knows more about the right life for them, so I would rather "ask" than "give" advice. Have you ever acknowledged that you are the source of your life, capable of anything if you really want it? What would it take to just allow it without thinking and live it freely from here on out? However, enjoy life, breathe, remember that it is possible. I will hold more in-person and online trainings and facilitation sessions, where I will pass on techniques, unblocking for those who choose. I will become an active part of what I have been communicating through my subjects. As an artist and mental health professional, I have many healing qualifications which greatly assist me in any area of my life, I am happy to share this knowledge with those who can benefit from it. In my experience, we are capable of much more than we often imagine or realise. This ring is an invitation, even if one doesn't believe in magic, to play with it, to make it happen if it does exist. 14kt gold, ruby, silver, 2022</image:caption>

<image:caption>Artistic Expression During COVID, I had not had time in so long to sit and create, and it allowed me time to slow down and think. The challenge was coming out of that tranquility. Opening my store in Palm Beach three years ago and seeing my collection in its entirety has forced me to rework every new design so that when it is completed, I feel it expresses my language. I make the pieces to fulfill my own expectations; these pieces are my voice as an artist.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Do What You Love The most impactful advice I've ever received came from my father, who told me to do what you love. If I were to offer advice, I would say that if you are creating to fulfill the expectations of others, you will end up doing your worst work. To contribute to my success as a business and artist, I practice yoga daily, often with my chihuahua by my side, and I indulge in absurd amounts of Japanese matcha. Looking into the future, my professional plans involve continuing to have the privilege to create the jewelry I want, evolving my brand while staying true to my artistic vision.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My passion for jewelry ignited from shopping with my father for jewelry gifts for my mother. Despite growing up in a design family, interior design was not my interest. It was always with jewelry. I am most passionate about my son. When it comes to creating jewelry, nothing needs to inspire me to create. It is something I cannot stop. I dream about it and my only issue is that I cannot execute all of my ideas as quickly as I would like.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Some people might think I have a proper design before making, but I actually don’t really know what it would look like in most cases. I decide the form, colour and texture as I am making. So the result is always a surprise for myself too. To embody the sense of transience and ambiguity, as seen in the image of the brooch on the left, which I captured by blurred photos, I investigated the system that gives shimmering movement. Springs express the fleeting untouchable existence, lightness and movement which are key elements in my development. The springs make playful effect by interacting with the wearer. The hundreds of springs tremble when it moves. The small gold discs will give a twinkling effect by reflecting light to express the transience and give the tactile quality. This brooch is entirely crafted from gold, symbolizing the value of the moment. 18K gold, 2017</image:caption>

However, luckily, they came out quite nicely and they became a part of the collection. I had tried many different materials for my graduation show including enamel, resin plastic, glass, wood and so on. Since I managed to get a positive result with these two materials, eggshell and seashell, I have been quite focused on them. <image:caption>Perfection and Imperfection I am doing my best to participate in shows and events so that I can meet artists and audiences all over the world. My work leads me to new places and people. Sometimes artist friends invite me to take part in group shows. Some gallerists or event organisers reach out to me to invite me for their shows and events. Japanese society tend to be strict. However, the Japanese aesthetics of Wabi-Sabi finds beauty in imperfection. I wonder if there is ʻperfect imperfectionʼ? As I engage in shows and events, meeting artists and audiences worldwide, my work leads me to new places and people, reflecting this appreciation for the imperfect. This ring has checked pattern for the strict rules and the cracking surface for the imperfection. Wood, lacquer, eggshell, seashell, mineral pigment, 2020</image:caption>

<image:caption>The most impactful advice I’ve received is ‘be confident’. My advice to offer is better to do it rather than just thinking about it. I avoid making rules or routines as I tend to be obsessive with silly rules. In the future, I hope to do a solo show and also publish my own artist book. This group of brooches are the work selected for the first time for ʻSchmuckʼ International Trade Fair in Munich. This annual show was the first time I saw contemporary jewelry and decided to pursue it as a field of study. Then I went abroad and enrolled in a school in the UK. Having my piece showcased there had always been a dream of mine. Being selected for this competition was one of my most memorable experiences. <image:title>Designers - MIKI ASAI - Still Life</image:title>
<image:caption>I have always been eager to make something since I was a toddler. I have kept small lovely objects I found. I remember that I wished to catch the sparkle of fireworks in the sky and put it into my pocket to take it back home. Somehow, I have similar feelings about what I see even now. Making is the way I collect these feelings and preserve them. These days, Iʼve been looking at still life as my motif. Recently I have been looking at daily objects as bottles or fruits in a bowl. This motif is about still life painting like Morandi or Cezanne. I look at those daily objects to picture and preserve the time of normal day in a normal life which is very precious but easy to be forgotten to appreciate it. I also simply enjoy creating the small vases and still life painting-ish images. Japanese Paper, lacquer, eggshell, mineral pigment, silver, steel wire, 2020-2021</image:caption>

<image:caption>My jewelry studio is founded on two key principles: quality and originality. Concept and craftsmanship are equally important to me. I am always trying to master “serious” traditional techniques and materials to realise humorous, non-conformist designs. If I was trying to define a deeper purpose behind what I do, I would say that: I aim to create pieces that really mean something to people, whilst also provoking them into thinking about what jewelry can be. I have always been driven by ideas, which is why my collections are so aesthetically diverse. From depicting tiny gold ants pilfering gemstones to piercing pearls, what unites my pieces is a specific way of seeing and responding to the world. <image:caption>Works on postcard series: Betty Luxe earrings X Lucas Cranach the Elder It truly takes a village to create a ring, from multiple conversations with a client to ensuring that I have the right team of craftspeople alongside me to help me execute that vision. Respecting and nurturing all these relationships is so important. It ensures that you are always engaging with people who value and have a stake in what you create and that you are making something that will be cherished. There's no jewelry without a wearer. In my 'Who?' collection, I've created a series of pearl portraits featuring people I care about. Pieces like the Betty Luxe earrings and Muso pendant pay tribute to my mother-in-law and best friend. <image:caption>My Grandad once knocked the bent prop shaft of a boat back into line with a sledgehammer. When asked how he did it with such confidence and precision, he answered, "it helps if you don't give a sh*t." This might seem like dubious advice but I have always taken it to heart - caring too much when you’re trying to achieve something is not always productive - sometimes it is actually paralyzing. I find that giving around 5% less of a sh*t helps me get things done! If I were to offer advice to anyone, it would be to trust yourself to fail. If you believe that you will be able to fix any mess that you might make, then you can be confident to give anything a go. I apply this philosophy to the rest of life as much as I do to making jewelry. Being prepared to fail and knowing that, if you do, you will work it out, is liberating. Yet one of my latest works is Brick by Brick, a series of necklaces with pendants shaped like trowels, cut from bricks and hung from a hand-woven cord. A connection between the body and the city through an intimate practice like jewelry design. The diversity of my work, ranging from art in public spaces to printed matter through wearable jewelry and objects, makes the process sometimes complicated, but also very exciting. <image:title>Designers - LIESBET BUSSCHE - Casually Dropped Pearl Necklaces</image:title>
<image:caption>I was working as a television journalist, but I felt too young to hold my own in this often ego-driven field. I decided to change careers and chose jewelry based on the romance of the craft. It is therefore all the more remarkable that I am rarely behind the jeweler’s workbench. Every project requires new techniques, ranging from installing electricity to cutting bricks. I enjoy figuring that out and it is part of my process. Moving from a mass medium like television to the intimacy of a jewelry practice has influenced the way I work. Casually Dropped Pearl Necklaces is one of my printmaking projects in which I use a medium that seeks to communicate with a wide audience. The temporary nature of this work, it may be covered over in the next hour, contrasts with the attention and time I devoted to it. That kind of valuable care is in the DNA of a jeweler and thus in mine, even if the end result is transient. 160 grams mat paper, 2016</image:caption>

      <image:title>Designers - LIESBET BUSSCHE - Street and Stones</image:title>
<image:caption>Streets and Stones is a work based on an intriguing collection of pearwood crystallographic models by mineralogist René Just Haüy from the beginning of the 19th century. The scientific models are accurate crystal shapes linked to their elemental structure. My interpretation is a wooden box filled with models made of urban materials. The work touches on so many levels of my interests: how it connects jewelry and the city, how it functions as a material library, how each material requires its own modus operandi, how it thematically refers to a component of the jewelry canon. A colleague of mine explained how his studio was filled with projects at every stage of progress: nascent ideas, projects in process and nearly completed assignments. Since then, I try to work a little less project-based by embracing this method, which creates space for projects to mature and ideas to be picked up and worked on later. I cherish the fact that I can create both independent and commissioned work. I like to retain the freedom to have that choice. I also find teaching and the contact with students a valuable addition to my practice. But I do notice that my practice is getting too busy and especially the commissioned work is getting too big to run alone. It is time to think about expansion and further professionalization. <image:title>Designers - LIESBET BUSSCHE - Window Diamond</image:title>
<image:caption>It took quite a few years to figure out what I wanted to do with jewelry. I struggled with the small size of it. Working larger and in public space has stimulated my curiosity in jewelry. I find passion a difficult, blinding word, although I have a deep-seated interest in how jewelry can tell a story and how I can tell stories with jewelry. But I consider it primarily a work domain, a field to explore, closely interwoven with our society. How to operate between inside and outside, between the street and the gallery, has always been a quest in my practice. Window Diamonds is a work that endures in a more traditional artist’s environment and is not a representation of an outdoor work. The work is composed of windows and assembled with hinges. Making a paper model, to visualize the concept, was fairly easy, but the making process was complicated. As with other works, I enter different worlds in my search for materials and techniques. I have noticed that atypical questions asked by artists opens many doors. Wood, glass, steel, paint, 2019</image:caption>

I learned to keep putting one foot in from to the other and I learned that what we were doing was working. That helped tremendously. We put more effort and attention into the retailers that responded well to our new collections and it paid off. I learned that we had tremendous support and loyalty from those retailers. Beyond this, our brand has a deeper purpose - to help retailers and consumers to see and understand just how magnificent fine to gem quality pearls are, how broadly pearls can be worn in a wide and creative range of designs and the magic that happens when our pearls are worn. What drives our passion is the cross section in design where extreme beauty, original design, wearability, salability, and relevance meet. That’s my challenge. Our work mantra is simple but crucial: Don’t settle. Don’t settle in accomplishing what a client want, don’t settle in quality of materials or craftsmanship. People are the success! It simply cannot happen without everyone in the ‘chain’ exceling at what they do. For us, it’s our pearl farmers and suppliers, our gem suppliers (starting with the right rough and then spectacularly cutting it), our craftspeople (metalsmiths, carvers and setters), our pearl specialist in the office, who spends the time to match with his extraordinary eye, our master stringer of more than 30 years, our office team who make retailers happy and our sales team. It goes on and on. The retailers that carry Assael and sell our pearls and jewelry are equally important. Their relationships and expertise are indispensable. It’s all about people! The satisfaction felt when the challenge is met, being verbalized and discussed with me would be the most salient. Doing the hard work, whatever it takes! I’m also mindful to respect the people around me and their contributions. <image:title>Designers - ASSAEL</image:title>
<image:caption>Gemstone Beginnings My passion started with colored gemstones. I had cousins in the retail jewelry business in my hometown of New Orleans. I fell in love with color but I did not have the patience for retail at the time, so I got a job selling loose colored gems to retailers and manufacturers in the 1970’s in the South… and I’m a female! It was unheard of at the time. This evolved into selling jewelry, but I kept pressing the makers to adjust and tweak pieces to make them more salable. I finally realized that I was a designer well into my 30’s. I was fortunate enough to work with an exceptionally innovative team of designers and metalsmiths in Italy for 17 years. I went to Italy every 6 weeks to be a part of the design team. The bench jewelers were super advanced and talented. Most importantly, they were willing to try anything… over and over again until they accomplished the mission. So I have to keep going back to that cross section of beauty, originality, wearability, salability and relevance. That’s my inspiration, not foliage or landscapes or the things that inspire most designers. How does it relate to our business? I start with the pearls or coral or both and imagine what I haven’t yet totally seen and what I might want to see on our customers.
